ROOKWOOD POTTERY TO RETURN TO MARKET
Source: Cincinnati Business Courier - A group of investors, led by a local commercial designer, plans to reboot the Rookwood Pottery plant and eventually sell its pottery downtown.
Christopher Rose, whose career includes stints at the design firms Interbrand, LAGA and LPK, acquired the company in early 2005 with Michael Rafter, a real estate developer, and Doug Karlson, a ceramic tile consultant. They purchased the rights to the name, trademark and assets from Arthur and Rita Townley of Brooklyn, Mich., for an undisclosed sum.
Since then, the group has worked to secure funding and finesse logistics to get the plant up and running again.
Among assets purchased are Rookwood Pottery's historical notebooks, formulas and recipes for glazes and clays, as well as than 2,000 pottery and architectural molds. The group plans to use this information to make new goods, which are planned to be sold at a store and manufacturing studio downtown by early 2007.
Rookwood dates back to 1880, when it was founded by Maria Longworth.
